There will be bicycle-themed mini festival at Glasson Dock in Lancaster on Sunday 14th June, with live music, street theatre, and much more, as part of celebrations for a new cycle trail around Morecambe Bay. The event is organised by Morecambe Bay Partnership and the charity Sustrans, as part of the opening of the new long-distance Bay Cycle Way and to welcome the inaugural riders as they finish the new route, which runs from Walney Island to Glasson Dock.
Everyone is invited to join in the fun at Glasson Dock between 1.30pm and 5pm on Sunday 14th June. They will be greeted with an afternoon of family fun celebrations, including live music with Rhythm Rascals, Penny Farthing and Clown Bikes from Cycles Recycled, balloon modelling, face painting and storytelling. There will also be a chance to find out more about the new Bay Cycle Way, try out electric bikes, and pick up a copy of the cycle route map. There will also be a limited number of free giveaways for those arriving first!
At 3pm there will be shouting, cheering and flag waving, as the intrepid band of cyclists who have completed the first full ride of the Bay Cycle Way cross the finish line. The Mayor of Lancaster will be on hand to officially welcome them home.
For those who fancy getting on their bike, there is a FREE marshalled MUSICAL CELEBRATION RIDE from Lancaster’s Millennium Bridge to the Glasson Dock celebrations, at 2pm. Cycle 5 miles on flat traffic free cycle path, with the fantastic musical Boom Bike – everyone is invited to join the fun! Meet on the Millennium Bridge at 1pm to bling your bike before setting off!
The 130km Bay Cycle Way has been made possible with funding from the Coastal Communtiies Fund and Heritage Lottery Fund. It is developed by Morecambe Bay Partnership and Sustrans and is the latest addition to Sustrans’ National Cycle Network. The launch event is part of activities across the country to mark the Network’s 20th anniversary.
