A big 'well done' is sent to the Primary School's football team who competed at Morecambe High School this week.  They played 3 matches, winning them all and scored a hatful of goals!  Great stuff.

Letter Scams

There seems to be several letter scams circulating at the moment. One consumer reported receiving a letter saying their previous employer owed them money from a pension scheme. The letter asked for
details of the consumer's birth certificate, passport and account. The consumer was immediately concerned as they did not have a pension with their previous employer.
There have been several reports of a letter allegedly from the Peoples Postcode Lottery. The letter states the recipient has won various amounts, such as £850,000, and asks the recipient to ring up to confirm. The number is a premium rate number. Consumers are also asked to pay an admin fee and in some cases people had been asked for £4,200.

Telephone Scams

There have been several reports this month of consumers receiving a call from a trader offering a new boiler under the Green Deal scheme. The boiler is offered for a payment of £299 but consumers later find they have signed a credit agreement and the £299 is just the initial payment. One consumer worked out they would have to pay £11,000 over several years.
Trading Standards advice is to check what energy grants are available by visiting www.gov.uk or contacting your local council.

Doorstep Incidents

Itinerant fish sellers have been reported in the Morecambe area. One elderly lady paid £35 for fish she thought was Salmon – it turned out to be dyed Coley. Consumers are advised to buy from local market traders, fishmongers and pre-arranged roundsmen, who have regular customers in the area and are easy to contact if things go wrong.
There have been several reports of rogue traders carrying out roofing work which is unnecessary, poor quality or extortionately priced. One elderly person was charged £21,000 for a re-roof of a one storey bungalow. Another was initially quoted £200 but was charged £4000 on completion of the work which was of very poor quality.
